La Metamorfosis –Franz Kafka
Background
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka is a literary classic that explores the transformation of identity and the gradual loss of humanity. The story follows Gregor Samsa, who wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into a beetle.
Project Overview
The visual concept is built around themes of awakening and realization. The eye motif on the cover is composed of three distinct layers, reflecting the novel’s three-part structure. This symbol functions as a metaphor for perception and awareness, mirroring Gregor’s shifting state of consciousness throughout the story. The layout is intentionally asymmetric, with page numbers placed on the left-hand pages and chapter numbers assigned fixed positions to create a controlled yet unsettling rhythm.
Results and Impact
Typography and composition reinforce the narrative metaphor. The text gradually moves upward across the page, echoing the image of a beetle climbing a wall and symbolizing Gregor’s increasing detachment from the human world. Through these subtle but deliberate design decisions, the book’s visual language translates Kafka’s psychological and existential themes into a cohesive editorial experience.
